Released on Blu-ray disc for the first time in the UK by Fabulous Film, is the movie Just a Gigolo. It stars David Bowie and Synde Rome in a story set in Berlin during the 1920s, and was notable for being the final film appearance of the Hollywood icon Marlene Dietrich.

This forgotten period-movie gem, which features David Hemmings (who also directed the film), Kim Novak and Maria Schell, has now been digitally remastered from original sources. It is presented for the first time ever in high definition, and comes with a 54-page booklet, as well as bonus features and the original soundtrack.

Just a Gigolo tells of Paul von Przygodski (Bowie), a young Prussian gentleman, who returns to his family home in Berlin following World War I. His home has been turned into a boarding house, his father is paralysed, and his mother is working in the Turkish baths. Abandoned for fame and fortune by his childhood friend, Cilly (Rome), his former commanding officer, Captain Kraft (Hemmings), tries to persuade Paul to join his right-wing movement and a widow, Helga von Kaiserling (Novak), briefly seduces him with the finer things in life. In a society in which the individual comes first and anyone can be bought, Paul is recruited by Baroness von Semering (Dietrich) as one in her regiment of gigolos. The cynical and decadent world of entertaining rich widows leads an increasingly disillusioned Paul to a poignant, chilling end.

This was Bowie’s first movie role after Nicolas Roeg’s The Man Who Fell to Earth in 1976. As Roeg’s film had played upon Bowie’s earlier identification with science fiction and alienness, so Just a Gigolo fitted his then-current interest in Berlin, pricked by a meeting with Christopher Isherwood, whose Goodbye to Berlin had inspired the musical Cabaret. The city had also been the recording location for Bowie’s then latest studio album, Heroes.
