The Bolshoi’s Don Quixote on the Big Screen

Posted on November 28, 2018

As part of the 2018-19 Bolshoi Ballet cinema season, Alexei Fadeyechev’s much-admired staging of Don Quixote will be screened on December 2 at venues all over the UK. Starring Ekaterina Krysanova as Kitri and Semyon Chudin as Basilio, the ballet is based on the famous book by Cervantes, in which doddery old Don Quixote sets out on a quest with his faithful manservant, Sancho Panza, to meet his ideal woman, Dulcinea. Along the way, the pair have many adventures, and the cast also includes toreadors, flamenco dancers, gypsies and dryads. Set to tuneful music by Ludwig Minkus, the production features Alexei Loparevic as Don Quixote, Olga Smirnova as the Queen of the Dryads, Anna Tikhomirova as the Street Dancer and Kristina Krysanova as Mercedes. Take a look at the trailer below to get a taste of what is on offer.

The Bolshoi cinema season will continue with a live broadcast of The Nutcracker on December 23; La Bayadère on January 20, The Sleeping Beauty on March 10; The Golden Age on May 7; and a double bill Carmen Suite and Petrushka on May 19.
