Alina Cojocaru Gala for Hospices of Hope

Since 2008, ballerina Alina Cojocaru (pictured) has been raising funds for the Bucharest Hospice Appeal, holding galas for Hospices of Hope. She returns to Sadler’s Wells on Sunday, May 12, with a varied repertory and plenty of starry friends.

Emma Gladstone to direct Dance Umbrella

Emma Gladstone (pictured) will succeed Betsy Gregory as the artistic director of Dance Umbrella. She will take up the post in November 2013, following this year’s Dance Umbrella festival, the last to be directed by Gregory.

Workshop: fundraising for artistic projects

Dance UK is organising a seminar for dance managers and self-managed artists, part of its training programme The Business of Dance. The seminar will be held on Friday, April 5 from 7pm to 10pm.

A century of spring

The Rite of Spring had its infamous first performance on May 29, 1913, at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris. Igor Stravinsky’s music and Vaslav Nijinsky’s choreography (pictured) caused an outcry. A century on from that riotous evening, The Rite of Spring will be celebrated around the world, with ballets, concerts, education projects and more.

New wave associates for Sadler’s Wells

Sadler’s Wells has announced a “new wave” of associate artists, ranging from flamenco star Rocío Molina (pictured) to Chinese company TAO Dance Theatre. The new scheme is designed to promote and support the next generation of artists, alongside the existing associate programme of established performers and choreographers.

Honorary doctorate for Alistair Spalding

Alistair Spalding, the artistic director of Sadler’s Wells, has been awarded with an honorary doctorate by Middlesex University in recognition of his contribution to the UK’s creative industries.

The Society of London Theatres has announced the nominations for the 2012 Laurence Olivier Awards.

Connect Festival

Opening tonight, the Connect Festival is two weeks celebrating dance and learning throughout life. Presented by the creative learning department of Sadler’s Wells, the programme goes from youth dance showcases to a performance by the Company of Elders, whose members are all over 60.

Breakin’ Convention 2012

The line-up for this year’s Breakin’ Convention has been announced. Hip hop performers come from around the world to the international festival of hip hop dance theatre, held each May Bank Holiday weekend at Sadler’s Wells in London.
