New season at the Peacock and Lilian Baylis Studio

Away from the main stage, the Sadler’s Wells autumn/winter season includes returning favourites such as Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, plus a Wild Card season and new collaborations in the Lilian Baylis Studio.

New season at Sadler’s Wells

Sadler’s Wells has announced plans for its autumn/winter season, including Akram Khan Company, Hofesh Shechter Company, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and the first dance work by fashion designer Hussein Chalayan. Programmes for the Peacock Theatre and the Lilian Baylis Studio have also been announced.

Farooq Chaudhry steps down as Dance UK chair

Farooq Chaudhry has stepped down as chair of Dance UK. The decision follows his public comments about contemporary dance training in the UK. Julian Flitter, Dance UK’s vice chair, has agreed to become interim chair.

UK contemporary dance training: choreographers raise concerns

Three leading British companies have expressed concern over the standards of training in UK contemporary dance schools. Akram Khan Company, DV8 Physical Theatre and Hofesh Shechter Company say they have to look overseas because they cannot find UK-trained dancers of sufficient calibre.

New appointments at English National Ballet

Caroline Thomson, a former deputy director-general of the BBC, has been appointed executive director of English National Ballet. In her first act as executive director, she announced that Farooq Chaudhry, co-founder and producer of Akram Khan Company, will be joining ENB as producer. National Dance Awards

The twelfth Critics’ Circle National Dance Awards took place today at The Place, in the Robin Howard Dance Theatre. Members of the dance section of the Critics’ Circle vote for the awards, on performances given in the UK between September 1, 2010 and August 31, 2011.

Akram Khan injured

Akram Khan has had to withdraw from upcoming performances due to an injured Achilles tendon. Khan (pictured) was due to perform in his solo show DESH, currently touring worldwide. He is expected to make a full recovery, and looks forward to returning to DESH and his other works in due course.

Arts Council cuts

Arts Council England (ACE) has announced its funding decisions for the next four years. Following the 29.6 per cent cut to ACE’s own budget for 2011 to 2015, there will be a 14.9 per cent cut in its budget for funded organisations.
