Tomorrow night, Anthony Dowell’s production of Swan Lake for The Royal Ballet will be seen in cinemas across the world.Supported by Bank of America Merrill Lynch, the relay is the opening event in a cinema season of nine ballet and opera productions that can be seen in 900 cinemas in 32 countries.
Swan Lake stars principal dancers Zenaida Yanowsky (who is featured on the cover of the October issue of Dancing Times) and Nehemiah Kish. Further ballets to be seen in the cinema season include The Nutcracker on December 13 starring Roberta Marquez and Steven McRae, and Christopher Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland on March 28, 2013, with Lauren Cuthbertson and Federico Bonelli.
In a press statement, the Royal Opera House says that it is delighted with the success and popularity of the previous 2011–12 cinema season, citing the fact that, “La Fille mal gardée was number three in UK Box Office on the day of the live screening, Romeo and Juliet was our biggest selling ballet and Rigoletto was our biggest selling opera in cinema yet.” For further details, including participating venues, see cinema.roh.org.uk.
