The Nutcracker hits the screen

People will be spoilt for choice with on-screen performances of The Nutcracker over the Christmas period.

 

Peter Wright’s popular staging of the work for The Royal Ballet will be broadcast live into cinemas worldwide for one night only on Thursday, December 13. The cast will be led by Roberta Marquez as the Sugar Plum Fairy and Steven McRae as the Prince. For full details of all cinema screenings, visit here

Meanwhile, the Maryinsky Ballet will present a 3D version of its production of The Nutcracker (pictured by Valentin Baranovsky) choreographed in 1934 by Vassily Vainonen in cinemas in the UK, as well as around the world. The leading roles will be danced by Alina Somova and Vladimir Shklyarov, and the orchestra will be conducted by Valery Gergiev. A list of participating venues can be found by clicking here 

Finally, the Bavarian State Ballet’s performance of John Neumeier’s version of The Nutcracker will be broadcast live and free of charge from the Nationaltheater Munich on this website on December 13. Taking the lead roles are guest artist Polina Semionova, Ilana Werner and Tigran Mikayelyan.

Jonathan Gray is editor of Dancing Times. He studied at The Royal Ballet School, Leicester Polytechnic, and Wimbledon School of Art where he graduated with a BA Hons in Theatre Design.
