Jamaal Burkmar, winner of the 2016 New Adventures Choreographer Award (NACA), will present three new works at a London showcase from September 21 to 24.
Held at the Platform Theatre at Central St Martins, by King’s Cross, the programme includes 16 Bars, created for Jamaal Burkmar Dance to original music by Otis Jones. Storm, danced by Shoreditch Youth Dance Company, explores music visualisation. The Calm, created for the newly formed Batch Ensemble, draws together two of Burkmar’s memories: “my father sat in front of the radio with a compact cassette and me sat in front of my laptop with limewire and a hard drive.”
Matthew Bourne, artistic director of New Adventures, said: “Jamaal is an exceptional new voice. His exploration of movement through eclectic music choices coupled with his desire to share his personal journey through his choreography make him an exciting and deserving winner.”
