Gary Avis and Friends

img_0030-copyOn September 11, The Royal Ballet’s Gary Avis (pictured) will hold a gala evening at the Regent Theatre, Ipswich, in support of The Hunger Project.

Names currently confirmed include English National Ballet’s Begoña Cao and The Royal Ballet’s Steven McRae, Roberta Marquez, Nehemiah Kish, Yuhui Choe, Bennet Gartside, Melissa Hamilton and Paul Kay. This is the first time that ENB or Royal Ballet dancers have appeared at the Regent since the 1960s. Born in Ipswich, Avis recently became patron of The Hunger Project, a charity that helps people living in hunger and poverty around the world by supporting community projects that will allow them to sustain themselves. Zoë was born in Edinburgh, and saw her first dance performances at the Festival there. She is the dance critic of The Independent, and has also written for The Independent on Sunday, The Scotsman and Dancing Times. In 2002, she received her doctorate from the University of York for a thesis on “Nationhood and epic romance: Ariosto, Sidney, Spenser”. She is the author of The Royal Ballet: 75 Years and The Ballet Lover’s Companion.
