Dancers’ Career Development (DCD) announce changes to funding policies 

Following significant funding cuts affecting most organisations within the arts sector and in order to ensure that for the foreseeable future, Dancers’ Career Development (DCD) will be able to continue to support and fund eligible professional dancers in developing their post performing careers, DCD’s Board has introduced the following changes, with immediate effect:

* First applications for funding must be made within ten years of retiring from full time performing and the maximum number of times that separate applications can be made has been limited to five per individual applicant.

* Successful awardees are asked to commence their training/career development programme within 12 months of being awarded. In exceptional circumstances, a further one year extension may be applied for.

* There are now limits on the amount of funding that may be requested for capital items and equipment.


In addition to the above, for eligible applicants from the dance companies that contribute to DCD, the following will apply:

* The discretionary upper limit on the total amount that may be awarded to an individual applicant has been reduced, subject to a banding system where the maximum amount that may be applied for will be related to the number of years that contributions will have been made to DCD, on the applicant’s behalf.

All changes (excepting the upper discretionary limit) apply to all new applications only. The above changes have been made to reflect both cuts in funding and to offer a structured, streamlined process for applicants. DCD and all their regular funders remain committed to providing care and guidance for all professional dancers and continuing to develop and grow the organisation for the future.

Jonathan Gray is editor of Dancing Times. He studied at The Royal Ballet School, Leicester Polytechnic, and Wimbledon School of Art where he graduated with a BA Hons in Theatre Design.
