compassPerformed for one night only, on Monday, April 23, Compass brings together a team of choreographers, composers, musicians and more than 100 dancers in a new production celebrating London’s variety.


Produced by Connect, the Sadler’s Wells creative learning department, the new work has choreographers from members of Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch, Jasmin Vardimon Company and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui’s Eastman. Compass has an original score of live and recorded music by Hanna Peel and Donna McKevitt, plus visual imagery by filmmaker Tal Rosner. The production aims to reflect London’s cultural diversity, arguing that one city can be many worlds, with as many routes “home” as we choose.


The dancers come from a range of groups. Gotitas de Sabor is a group of 19 children, aged between seven and 14. The children, who are of Columbian, Bolivian and Ecuadorian heritage, live in Elephant and Castle, and have worked with Michela Meazza, a dancer with Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures.


The Company of Elders, the theatre’s over-60s non-professional performing group, have been working with choreographers Paul Blackman and Christine Gouzelis of Jasmin Vardimon Company.


The Integrated Community Group includes five dancers with learning disabilities, one who uses a wheelchair and seven other performers. They have worked with Helder Seabra and Nienke Reehorst of Eastman.


The Emerging Artists group includes students from Central School of Ballet, London Contemporary Dance School, London Studio Centre, The Place and Trinity Laban. They have worked with choreographers Felix Bürkle and Pascal Merighi, who represent Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch.


The 14 participants of the Youth Group are aged from ten to 26 years. Some came to the project through the Islington Arts Factory, while others were reached through the Roma Support group. They have been working with choreographer Mafalda Deville from Jasmin Vardimon Company.

Zoë was born in Edinburgh, and saw her first dance performances at the Festival there. She is the dance critic of The Independent, and has also written for The Independent on Sunday, The Scotsman and Dancing Times. In 2002, she received her doctorate from the University of York for a thesis on “Nationhood and epic romance: Ariosto, Sidney, Spenser”. She is the author of The Royal Ballet: 75 Years and The Ballet Lover’s Companion.
