Caught in the act!

web_dscf1571zWanstead High School students discovered the joys and frustrations of the documentary photographer during a dance photography workshop in Ilford last week. Redbridge Borough Council and Dance Photographer of the Year organised two such events to get more young people interested in dance photography and to publicise the forthcoming national photography competition. 

Everyone was busy snapping salsa teachers Giselle and Gary from Berties when an opportunist seized Giselle’s bag and ran. At the end of the day, the group listed 15 different things that they had learned about dance photography and, although it is yet to be confirmed by the police, it seems probable that one budding photojournalist may have even caught the thief in the act.

Nicola Rayner was editor of Dance Today from 2010 to 2015. She has written for a number of publications including The Guardian, The Independent and Time Out Buenos Aires, where she cut her teeth as a dance journalist working on the tango section.
