Candoco Dance Company’s autumn tour showcases the breadth of the company’s repertory, from a reimagined Trisha Brown classic to improvisation inspired by a documentary about opera singers.

Candoco, the UK’s first professional dance company of disabled and non-disabled artists, was founded in 1991. This tour, part of the company’s 25th anniversary season, opens at Tramway, Glasgow on September 23, and visits the Jerwood DanceHouse in Ipswich, Sadler’s Wells in London and Contact, Manchester. At each venue, the company will dance a double bill drawn from a repertory of four pieces.

Alexander Whitley’s Beheld, a new commission, is set to music by composer Nils Frahm. Seven dancers explore the limits of the space around them, in a work that uses large swathes of fabric.

Let’s Talk About Dis, Hetain Patel’s first work for Candoco, starts with the dancers’ individual personalities and physicalities, asking what identity is and how it is formed.

Notturnino, by Brussels-based Swiss choreographer Thomas Hauert, was inspired by the documentary Tosca’s Kiss, which followed the lives of retired opera singers living in a nursing home in Milan. Hauert has created an improvisational score with Candoco’s dancers, creating a different experience for each performance.

Set and Reset/Reset is a unique restaging of Trisha Brown’s 1983 work Set and Reset, reimagined for Candoco’s unique perspective. Working with Abigail Yager, an associate and ex-dancer with Trisha Brown Dance Company, the cast learned the piece’s original choreographic phrases before following an extensive improvisation process, based on Brown’s original instructions to her company in 1983: keep it simple, act on instinct, stay on the edge, work with visibility and invisibility, get in line.

Zoë was born in Edinburgh, and saw her first dance performances at the Festival there. She is the dance critic of The Independent, and has also written for The Independent on Sunday, The Scotsman and Dancing Times. In 2002, she received her doctorate from the University of York for a thesis on “Nationhood and epic romance: Ariosto, Sidney, Spenser”. She is the author of The Royal Ballet: 75 Years and The Ballet Lover’s Companion.
