Big Dance 2014

square-451599970 10Big Dance is here! This year’s edition of the biennial celebration of dance runs from July 5 to 13, including performances, the Big Dance Bus Tour and Big Dance Shorts, televised on Channel 4.

The week was launched on July 2 by ballerina and Strictly judge Darcey Bussell, this year’s Big Dance special ambassador. Highlights include the Big Commonwealth Dance, specially created by choreographer Rafael Bonachela. Between July 12 and 13, the dance will be performed all over England. The performance will be broadcast to global audience from London’s Trafalgar Square, outside Sydney Opera House and in Buchanan Street, Glasgow. Performed by thousands of dancers, the Big Commonwealth Dance will link all three cities in one spectacular showcase.

Other highlights of the Big Dance Weekend include mass performances and outdoor events across the UK, with dances from Bridlington Beach to Birmingham Markets – and to Spa Fields Park in London, a stone’s throw from the Dance Today office! The Big Dance Bus and Big Dance Pop Up Cinema will tour the UK, bringing a portable dance floor, workshops and movies to every part of the country.

In Liverpool, Merseyside Dance Initiative present We are the City, a huge dance parade on July 13. The spectacle starts at Anfield Road and moves to Stanley Park, with a cast including groups of ballroom dancers, beekeepers, urban farmers, knitters, bikers and the fire brigade. Zoë was born in Edinburgh, and saw her first dance performances at the Festival there. She is the dance critic of The Independent, and has also written for The Independent on Sunday, The Scotsman and Dancing Times. In 2002, she received her doctorate from the University of York for a thesis on “Nationhood and epic romance: Ariosto, Sidney, Spenser”. She is the author of The Royal Ballet: 75 Years and The Ballet Lover’s Companion.
