ballroom dancer documentary screening

ballroom-dancer-documentary-screeningThe film Ballroom Dancer is an intimate, award-winning portrait of elite dancers, exploring the perfectionism behind the glitter and glamour. Directed by Christian Bonke and Andreas Koefoed, the documentary follows Slavik Kryklyvyy as he makes his comeback to the world of professional dancing.

A decade earlier, Slavik won the World title with Joanna Leunis. While Joanna went on to spectacular success with Michael Malitowski, Slavik’s career sputtered.

Ballroom Dancer shows Slavik’s new on- and off-stage partnership with Amateur champion Anna Melnikova. Kryklyvyy is willing to sacrifice everything to regain his former glory, expecting nothing but the best from Melnikova. The couple dance around the world, clinging to their relationship as the pressure mounts. The documentary tells its story through training sessions, hotel rooms and on the dancefloor.

Ballroom Dancer is in cinemas on Janaury 18 and on DVD and download from February 4.

Nicola Rayner was editor of Dance Today from 2010 to 2015.
