Autumn casting at English National Ballet

enb-swan lake c sian trenberthEnglish National Ballet has announced principal casting for its autumn tour of Swan Lake and Coppélia and Christmas run of The Nutcracker.

Alejandro Virelles, who joins the company as a principal from Boston Ballet, will make his debut in Swan Lake, partnering Alina Cojocaru. During the tour, he will also partner Tamara Rojo and Laurretta Summerscales.

Ksenia Ovsyanick and Shiori Kase make their debuts as Odette-Odile. Fernanda Oliveira and Elena Glurdjidze also dance this double role, though fans of Glurdjidze have just one chance to catch her, in Liverpool on November 20. The production, Derek Deane’s traditional proscenium arch staging, tours to Manchester, Milton Keynes, Liverpool and the London Coliseum.

Zoë was born in Edinburgh, and saw her first dance performances at the Festival there. She is the dance critic of The Independent, and has also written for The Independent on Sunday, The Scotsman and Dancing Times. In 2002, she received her doctorate from the University of York for a thesis on “Nationhood and epic romance: Ariosto, Sidney, Spenser”. She is the author of The Royal Ballet: 75 Years and The Ballet Lover’s Companion.
