Alchemy, a new festival celebrating contemporary and traditional culture from India, will be held at the Southbank Centre from April 7–11. The programme consists of music, dance, literature, food, debate and fashion, including free classical and folk dance workshops.
Other dance highlights include Sharira, the last work by choreographer Chandralekha, often called the founder of modern Indian dance. Gauri Sharma Tripathi, artist in residence at Southbank Centre, presents a preview of her new work Kireet, Mavin Khoo’s new production Dancing the Shiva, Sonia Sabri in South Asian Dance – An Introduction. Akademi present a rooftop performance of their new site specific piece Sufi: Zen, while there’s a giant carnival folk dance in The Clore Ballroom. On the last day of the festival, special guests join Gauri Sharma Tripathi to evoke dance in the Moghul era. Details from www.southbankcentre.co.uk.
