Dance through history:

Monday, 25 June 2012

charlton-houseAs part of Big Dance Week, the Early Dance Circle will celebrate historical dance from the galliard to the Victorian ballroom, with events from July 7 to 15.

At the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Darren Royston and the Nonsuch Dancers will lead a workshop on cosmic dance, relating renaissance dance to ancient Greek astronomy, while at the Golden Gates, Kensington Palace, you can enjoy “Very Victorian Dancing”, from the country dances of Victoria’s youth to the polka, led by Barbara Segal and Chalemie dancers.

At Charlton House (pictured) in Greenwich, there will be free events in dance throughout history: medieval dance, Elizabethan court styles, dances of the Regency era. You can try out the dances of the Italian renaissance courts,  or join a workshop in Jacobean masquing and be an Olimpick Knight of 1612. See www.earlydancecircle.co.uk for details.
