The Dance Museum

Wednesday, 02 June 2010 14:43 | Written by Jon Gray | PDF | Print | E-mail

The Dance Museum, Stockholm may be forced to move home. While its own building is renovated, the Swedish Government will take over the Dance Museum's present home, which is handsomely placed opposite the Royal Palace, between the Royal Opera and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The forced move is likely to take place in 2012. No new location for the museum has yet been confirmed, though several sites have been considered. The Dance Museum is currently showing Masks - intangible heritage of Europe, an exhibition about mask traditions from the Carnaval and Mask Museum in Binche, Belgium (until September 19, 2010).  In the US, the New York Public Library, which houses a superb dance collection, is facing the harshest cut in its history, with the potential loss of US$37 million. This could lead to the closure of 10 library branches, 36 per cent staff reductions and a cut of six-day service to four days. The NYPL urges supporters to protest at these cuts. For more information, see nypl.org. In happier library news, the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library has won the Excellence Award of the International Association of Music Libraries. Housed in Cecil Sharp House, the Vaughan Williams Memorial Library is England's national folk music and dance archive. For more information, see efdss.org.
