Aladdin, Lyric Pieces for Birmingham Royal Ballet:

Monday, 20 February 2012

brbstarscinderellabillcooperBirmingham Royal Ballet has announced its performances at the Birmingham Hippodrome for the 2012–13 season. They include the UK premiere of David Bintley’s Aladdin and Lyric Pieces by award-winning American choreographer Jessica Lang.

The company opens the season with performances of Swan Lake at The Lowry, Salford from September 19–22. Back home at the Birmingham Hippodrome, the company dance Opposites Attract, a Triple Bill of Bintley’s Take Five, Hans van Manen’s Grosse Fuge and Lang’s Lyric Pieces.

Lang, who danced with Twyla Tharp, now directs her own company, Jessica Lang Dance, and has created more than 75 dance works, for companies including Joffrey Ballet, Ailey II and ABT II. Lyric Pieces will be Lang’s first work for a major European company, jointly commissioned by BRB and International Dance Festival Birmingham 2012. It will be set to musical miniatures by the composer Edvard Grieg, with designs by Elena Comendador and lighting by Nicole Pearce.

The company dance Swan Lake at the Hippodrome from October 2–6, before Bintley’s Cinderella returns for a Christmas season from November 21 to December 9. Last month, Bintley won the Critics’ Circle National Dance Award for Best Classical Choreography for Cinderella.

Created for the National Ballet of Japan in 2008, Bintley’s Aladdin has its UK premiere at the Hippodrome from February 15–23. The production has music by Carl Davis, with sets by Dick Bird, costumes by Sue Blane and lighting by Mark Jonathan.

Peter Wright’s production of Coppélia returns from June 4–8, followed by Bintley and Galina Samsova’s production of Giselle from June 19–22.

Following the popularity of 6.30pm performances of The Nutcracker with family audiences in 2011, there will be 6.30pm Friday evening performances of Cinderella (November 30), Aladdin (February 22), Coppélia (June 7) and Giselle (June 21) during the season.

Tickets for the Birmingham season go on sale from April 12, 2012, at or by telephoning the box office on 0844 338 5000. Tickets for Swan Lake at The Lowry are now on sale at or by telephoning 0843 208 6000. More touring dates for the 2012–13 season will be announced soon.
