Week 4

Something wicked this way comes…

Two theme shows in a row, and sadly Strictly went from bad to totally crackers.

Week 3

Hollywood Week on Strictly was the equivalent of a resolutely reformed character falling off the wagon. Cardinal sins included:

  • The return of the horrific “comedy” VTs and gimmicks. Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water…
  • A disappointing lack of content in some routines. Still, this gives us the opportunity to play a brand-new game: “Spot the ballroom!”
  • Plagiarism galore, with reused songs, ideas and steps. These will be heralded with the COPYCAT KLAXON
  • Schizophrenic scoring. After a wonderfully restrained start to the series, the judges jumped the shark – some couples still got appropriate Week 3 marks, others were wildly overscored

Week 2

2fullcastWeek 2 of Strictly saw a leaderboard shake-up, pick‘n’mix dances (because it’s always easy to compare a foxtrot and a salsa with Viennese and a jive, ya? OK?), and the reappearance of something more hated than Jaws, Piers Morgan and George Osborne combined: the dreaded dance-off.

team-shotCan you believe it? Against all odds, this Saturday teatime, light-entertainment treat involving perma-tanned celebs tangoing to Priscilla and stripping to Hot Chocolate (yes, that really happened), beloved of grannies, kids, dance fanatics and students with ironic viewing preferences alike, has survived general scepticism, format tinkering and the continued onslaught of He Who Must Not Be Named over on that other channel to bring us ten seasons of ballroom bliss.

A Summer Like No Other :

agdsc_5897zAs part of her day-by-day countdown to Big Dance Week 2012, July 7–15, Dance Today photographer Carole Edrich posted a different dance-related photo a day on her blog. Now, the other side of Big Dance Week, Carole has decided to continue blogging and is sharing her photographs for this Summer Of Dance with Dance Today. In this penultimate post, she talks about what she has posted and why...

The Summer of Dance is slowing right down which is why last week’s images are on just three subjects. While I’m working hard to clear the decks for the Mayor's Thames Festival this weekend I’ve also been processing loads of shots from recent events.

Although I had been invited to join the Trinidad and Tobago truck at the Notting Hill Carnival, I couldn't find it. Instead I joined the lead of six trucks run by party-mad PoisonUK crowd and briefly met the man at the top, whom I hope to interview in the future.

As the Summer of Dance continues, the photo opportunities are getting better and better so the workload isn't changing at all. I came back from a great trip to Canada which included a fascinating behind-the-scenes tour of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's custom-built home to the last week of the Olympics and Tango Al Fresco and I'm working hard to clear the decks to be ready for the Notting Hill Carnival next week.
