September 2007

This month we begin our coverage of the glorious season by the Bolshoi Ballet at the Coliseum, with more to come next month. An account of an informal press conference with Alexei Ratmansky can be found in the news section on our website, and we shall be discussing his future plans for his company in these pages in October. We shall also have an interview by Margaret Willis with Ekaterina Krysanova, who will be our Dancer of the Month, following in the illustrious footsteps of Natalia Osipova (August 2006) and Ivan Vasiliev (July 2007). This month we continue Mary Goodhew’s fine series on “The Making of a Dancer” which, according to the results of our recent readership survey (details and statistics on page 17) is proving immensely, and rightly!, popular with readers. Mindy Aloff talks to Christopher Wheeldon about his new company and Simon Cooper tells Alison Kirkman about his experiences with the JADE Fellowship. We have details of the many dance attractions which will be on offer in the new season and make a few recommendations in Calendar. Not strictly a dance matter, but perhaps useful information to readers who have not yet discovered a travel hazard in the Covent Garden area: London Underground are installing extra ticket gates and increasing the size of the ticket hall at Covent Garden station over the coming months. While this takes place, the station will operate as a way out only, and ticket facilities will not be available. The alternatives for getting home are a walk to Leicester Square (Northern and Piccadilly lines) or to Holborn (Central and Piccadilly lines), especially if you are connecting with other tube or rail services. More cheerful news is that Dancing Times has new distribution facilities and will now be available at the larger branches of W.H. Smith, as well as Borders
