December 2007

Splendid news has this month come out of Birmingham! Birmingham Royal Ballet was invited to perform an extract from Twyla Tharp’s Nine Sinatra Songs on BBC1’s “Strictly Come Dancing” on November 4 and accepted with alacrity. Alexander Campbell, Samara Downs, Momoto Hirata, Victoria Marr, Tom Rogers and Tyrone Singleton performed different styles of ballroom dance and reached an audience of probably over seven million viewers. Even more valuable was the opportunity for the company to give its website on the “Like what you see?” slot so interested spectators could find out where to see these dancers and BRB live in theatres by visiting www.brb.org.uk/allthatjazz for details of the next jazz performances. Also from Birmingham, from Elmhurst School for Dance, which is in association with BRB, comes the result of the Dream Futures gala held in Symphony Hall on July 1. In this enterprise the school collaborated with other schools and the City of Birmingham Symphony Youth Chorus to support the work of Save the Children and specifically to help the education of children in war-torn countries (announced in our June issue). The gala has raised a sum in the region of £50,000 and we are proud to know that generous donations were made by Dancing Times readers. Congratulations to all involved in such a superb charity event. On this happy note, we wish all our readers a very Merry Christmas!
