March 2008

After months of preparation, the mammoth MOVE IT festival of dance and all its appurtenances takes place for the third successive year, at Olympia, starting on Friday, March 7, and continuing through Sunday, March 9. The organisers give a taste of what is on offer on page 45 and we at Dancing Times (visit us on Stand 100) know from experience of the two previous extravaganzas that they do not make false claims. The sheer multiplicity of participants is amazing, and so are the numbers of visitors likely to be there. Learning from experience and listening to comments, the organisers have consistently improved all facilities and the 2008 festival promises to be the smoothest, as well as the biggest, event of the series. Support and collaboration from the entire dance world is warmly recommended. In this issue of Dancing Times, which will be available at Olympia as well as at all usual outlets, including now larger branches of W H Smith, we publish the first instalment of a GCSE study aid on Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. Gerald Dowler talks to Kenneth Tharp, the new man in charge at The Place. Mindy Aloff re-introduces New York City Ballet, returning to London this month after too long an absence, and David Jays previews the Stuttgart Ballet. Dance Scene, in addition to UK coverage, looks at the Bolshoi Ballet in Paris, New York City Ballet at home, the Sydney Festival, and the Berlin Ballet.
